And if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy."
Love hurts sometimes.
Just as sickness in one part of our body makes us feel ill all over -- a sore throat, for instance, or an imbalance of certain neurotransmitters to the brain, fueling the depression that consumes body and soul -- so in the larger body of our relationships, the pain of others often becomes our own.
It's the flip-side of this amazing coin, you see. For the obverse carries with it joy -- joy in the victories, contentment, fruitfulness, elation, and blessings of those about whom we care.

Writing on the great Love that connects us, particularly within the Body of Christ, Henri Nouwen observes of Paul's words to the Corinthians:
"Every time we love others deeply we feel their pain deeply.
However, joy is hidden in the pain.
When we share the pain we also will share the joy."
Perhaps we're afraid to love for this very reason. Because, no matter the joy, letting others into our lives means a certain vulnerability we can't avoid. How, then, do we confront our need to love and be loved? To love
- When we know our loved ones will at times suffer, often be kept apart, and one day die?
- When those closest to our hearts can wound us with careless words and thoughtless actions, sometimes even intentional in the midst of their pain?
- When insecurity and distrust come to call, causing them to withdraw out of fears of being misunderstood, shamed, or burdensome?
- When their differences from us become divisive, rather than a reason to come together in celebration of God's unique giftings?
- And vice versa (because it's a two-way street for all of the above).
So many possible barbs on this heart-connecting wire of Love...

And yet, deep down I believe that amidst them all, we are called to trust.
No. We are called to trust in Him.
The One Who was nailed to the fence post of our sin and shame, suffering it all so that we might live. Love Himself, Who died on a cross, was buried, and rose again, all in order to give us life eternal. For so He loved us.

When all we can see is the pain and suffering, we would do well to remember that God sees the full picture, including the ultimate purpose, pleasure, and vast potential of His redeeming Love.
That we, too, are thus called to love, right in the midst of our vulnerabilities, in between all the hurts and fears that seem to hedge us in on both sides.

Because as we love others through good times and bad, again and again God gives us fresh opportunities to trust.
We begin to realize that it is His Love flowing through our hearts -- Love that is unbroken and able to carry the inevitable burdens along the way -- making it possible for us to love others, and to love them well.
"Grow strong in the Light of My Presence.
Your weakness does not repel Me.
On the contrary it attracts My Power,
which is always available to flow into a yielded heart."
~ Sarah Young, Jesus Calling for November 2
For it is in yielding to Him -- a Man of sorrows acquainted with grief, Who yielded His Life in the ultimate sacrifice -- that the face of our pain meets the Face of Joy...
And we are made strong.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI'm hopping over from the IP link up. It's nice to be here. :) Your line: "Because as we love others through good times and bad, again and again God gives us fresh opportunities to trust." is what grabs me most tonight. Ahh, those chances to trust our God,his people, and to reach out again, to love and serve again.
Thanks.

I love these reflections of yours, Jennifer... Reminding me, yet again, to keep reaching out to Him and to let His Love flow through me to others, in whatever way His Spirit leads.
DeletePraise to the God of second (third, fourth, ad infinitum) chances! Never should we give up on Him...because He has never given up on us.
God bless you, Jennifer, in your continued trusting, loving, and serving...

Beautiful photos to go along with your encouragement to love. When Jesus designed the church, he meant for us to love each other this way. I'm your neighbor at the Weekend Brew.
ReplyDeleteThank you, faithful neighbor! I'm delighted you stopped by and shared your heart today.
DeleteYou would think that when it comes to love, we would need the encouragement for when it's our enemies we're talking about. But when it's our beloved? Truly, God's design for intimacy must be beyond wonderful for Satan to have put so many stumbling blocks -- like fears and vulnerabilities -- in our way.
Thankfully, Christ has already overcome! Now *that's* encouragement.
God bless you, Carol,

A few paragraphs into your post, I begin to hear a thought that sounds like a megaphone into my brain & it seems like I've never known this before, (but actually I have). The thought, " to love, absolutely REQUIRES that we enter into another's pain with them."( I believe that is called empathy.) The wire with all the barbs...brilliant! This is a wonderful post! Love & prayers, in Jesus, Cynthia
ReplyDeleteI so appreciate your kind words today, Cynthia.
DeleteThe thought of a huge Empathy Megaphone sounding off in our brains: LOVE IT! We certainly need those reminders...loud, clear, and often. I'm so glad that a few simple lines and photos ("barbs" and all) managed to do that for you today. :-)
Thanks again for visiting... May you dwell in His Grace and Peace day by day!

Oh this was beautiful! I'm so sorry it took me several days to come by but I'm so grateful you linked this up for Three Word Wednesday. I'm so grateful to have you as part of this writing family. Such good words here!!! Wishing you a blessed Sunday.
ReplyDeleteMuch love,
Beth
How nice to fellowship with you this Sunday, Beth. God bless you!
DeleteThis post took some time in the shaping (with the parallel photo-narrative coming later, growing out of and then restructuring the words). But, the title three? I think they were destined for your Wednesday link-up from the beginning!
Thanks again for these three-word writing challenges and the special opportunities they provide for community. Your warm welcome into the "writing family" certainly touched my heart this morning. It's a joy and an honor, my Word-filled writing sister. :-)
In Christ's Love,
HBHW
